Tell Me More…
Skimmia are a delightful low-growing plant with the flowers clustered into panicles above strong sturdy brown stems. Skimmia japonica ‘Fragrant Cloud’ has large flowerheads and from the white bell-shaped flowers a wonderful scent is emitted. The perfume is similar to Convallaria (Lily of the Valley). The contrast between the brown stems and white flowerheads is stark and enhances the enchantment of this variety. ‘Fragrant Cloud’ is in full bloom in April and May though there is significant winter interest as buds form during the coldest months. Skimmia produce male and female flowers on separate plants, and this is a male plant. The males create a long-lived dome-shaped shrub and as a result are ideal for hedging, containers, and woodland-style gardens. Light or part shade is the perfect position reaching a mature height and spread of 1-1.5m after 10 years. Skimmia japonica ‘Fragrant Cloud’ has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for outstanding garden performance. Hardy shrub.
