Tell Me More…
A rare, woodland beauty, Hemiboea strigosa ‘Fen Zhong’ originates from China, and loves a moist and shady site. Dainty clusters of white tubular, slightly hairy, gloxinia-like blooms appear in abundance, with a pink flush and bronze markings. Held on wiry stems in autumn, above large, lush evergreen cushions of foliage. Readily rooting, the magnificent, dense groundcover creeps, whilst suppressing weeds. A cousin of the African Violet streptocarpus – a common and popular house plant – Hemiboea strigosa has an easy-going nature and is one of the hardiest, as most in the Gesneriad family with their fuzzy foliage and attractive flowers are tropical. Hemiboea strigosa ‘Fen Zhong’ prefers to be grown in moist soil in a fully or partially shaded spot. Reaching a mature height and spread of 30-45cm, a half-hardy perennial with an RHS hardiness rating of H3, so may require some protection during winter, the foliage dying back to a rosette.
