Tell Me More…
A statuesque and aromatic newcomer with zingy colours which contrast beautifully with pink-flushed stems. Angelica archangelica is a truly majestic biennial which flowers in its second year, then sets seed and fades – so be sure to collect the seed to propagate more plants for your garden in years to come (although plants may naturalise of their own accord anyway). This architectural beauty reaches up to 2 metres tall and wide – ideal for the back of a border, a wildlife garden or a rockery, or anywhere it can benefit from moist soil in partial to full shade. Even better, Angelica archangelica is edible and the stems are frequently used to make candied decoration for cakes and desserts due its vibrant colour and delicate flavour. Dramatic umbellifers are borne on strong, dark stems from May to July, transitioning to beautiful seedheads once the flowers fade – perfect for floral displays and irresistible to pollinators and birds. Plants are hardy with foliage retained from April through to October before fading back below ground over winter.
