The largest of the blue Hostas, this slow growing hardy perennial forms large clumps of glaucous grey-blue leaves that can each grow up to 40cm (16″) long. The enormous leaves provide an ideal backdrop for its bell shaped, white flowers throughout June. Hosta ‘Blue Angel’ is a well known cultivar with an RHS AGM for its excellent garden performance. A choice specimen plant that will transform a damp, shady corner of the garden. Height: 90cm (36″). Spread: 120cm (48″).

Culinary note: The best part to use is the ‘hoston’, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Growing Information

Grow Hosta plants in sun or dappled shade, on rich, moist, well-drained soil. Plants can grow well in a sunny border, but will need to be kept reliably moist. Plants may perform better on slightly acid soils. Before planting, work some fresh compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
